September 27, 2026 6:23

We grew potatoes two ways this year: trendy "potato towers" and a plain old row in the ground. Harvest day settles it, and one method was "pretty laughable… not worth it."

The Experiment

Potato towers are all over social media as the space-saving way to grow a mountain of potatoes. So we built them with layers of straw and compost, planted seed potatoes in between, and grew a traditional in-ground row right next to them. Then we tore everything down on camera to see which one really produced.

  • Pulling our whole onion crop and curing it on the porch (with a time-lapse!)
  • A second-season walk past the peppers, squash, cherry tomatoes, raspberries, blackberries, and grapes
  • A surprise helper hiding in the corn
